The original lighthouse was located on the eastern end of the Akaroa Harbour on the South Island of New Zealand. It was moved on October 4th, 1980, nine kilometers closer to the town of Akaroa to save if from being destroyed. The Akaroa Lighthouse is one of the few wooden lighthouses that still exists and it was cut into three pieces to be able to transport it. The appearance of the Akaroa Harbour Lighthouse is still very similar to the original structure after it was relocated.
The lighthouse stood in its original site at the entrance to the harbour for 100 years and two lighthouse keepers were kept to control it. The light was seen for approximately 23 miles and flashed every ten seconds to help water vessels navigate their...

In 1976 it was said that the light was going to be altered so that it was automatic and the Lighthouse Preservation Society stepped in to save it. The mechanism that controls the light works by clockwork with eight prisms surrounding a 1000 watt bulb.
Today, the Akaroa Harbour Lighthouse on the South Island of New Zealand is only lit for special occasions or on holidays.
