As can be seen from this aerial view of Ouimet Canyon in Ouimet Provincial Park, this is a very deep gorge. Located about 60km northeast of Thunder Bay, the Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park is accessible to visitors and people can a network of trails to platforms which afford stupendous views of the steep sided canyon walls and base as well as the gorgeous scenery which surrounds it. This gorge received its name from a former railway station in the area which was named after the former Canadian Minister of Public Works Joseph-Aldric Ouimet.
The deep gorge was most likely created when igneous rock shifted and split open, possibly due to the weight of glaciers, and then massive amounts of erosion from wind and rain carved out the depth of the canyon.
