Mountain after mountain extends throughout Westland National Park on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand under the gloomy looking clouds that linger above. The green bush that flourishes on these mountains of Westland National Park grows across the landscape of rainforest until reaching the scenic ice covered areas of the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers.
These mountains at the South West end of Westland National Park have been shaped by glacial movement over millions of years. A portion of the area that covers this forest is adorned with beech and podocarps, some of them being over 800 years old while other sections are thick shrubs and ferns.
Around the base of these mountains, rivers flow and a variety of wildlife...
... wanders throughout the area using the rivers as a drinking source. Hiking adventures in and around the mountains are available but they require people to be physically fit and have a fair amount of experience in this type of hiking.
Westland National Park is a beautiful place to explore while visiting the South Island of New Zealand and is only accessible on State Highway 6. Dress appropriately for the climate as these mountains have been known to receive a fair amount of rain although summer can be extremely hot and humid.
Journeying into these mountains will be an adventure that will be very memorable on your vacation to New Zealand. Aerial views are another interesting way to see Westland National Park if time is of the essence.
