Located 65 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay in an area known as the Lakehead, Ouimet Canyon in the provincial park of the same name, is a sheer walled canyon composed of volcanic rock.
It is said to have been created over millions of years, then gouged out by glaciers or the turbulent melt waters of glaciers. It continues to be shaped today by natural forces such as wind and rain.
As rugged and littered with boulders as it seems at the base of the canyon, it is actually home to a variety of rare arctic and sub-arctic plant species. Due to only brief periods of sunlight,...
... and a low turn over of fresh air, a micro climate exists at the base which enables ice to linger year round, plus the large boulders protect the plants.
Although the Provincial Park provides viewing platforms for visitors, one of the best ways to see Ouimet Canyon in all its grandeur is from the air. The aerial perspective shows the boreal forest carpeting the Lakehead area and the sudden split in the landscape which is Ouimet Canyon.

From an aerial perspective, Ouimet Canyon appears like a giant tear in the forested landscape of Ontario, Canada. Situated in the Ouimet Canyon provincial park, the canyon was named after a railway station which was once located nearby.
